Boy Scouts Learning About Scuba Diving

Boy Scouts Learning About Scuba Diving

On Saturday, I hosted a Discover Scuba Diving session for the Boy Scouts at the YMCA. We had 6 Scouts and 2 parents sign up for the event.  It was a lot of fun to show everyone why I like scuba diving so much and what the North Carolina coast has to offer. Doing these events with the Boy Scouts is a way for me to encourage people to enjoy scuba diving early in their life and to let people see what is available to them in their own backyard.

I enjoyed seeing the expressions on everyone’s faces as I showed them pictures of wrecks, Sand Tiger sharks, Hawksbill Sea turtles and Green Moray eels.  It was especially fun to pass around a few of the shark’s teeth that I have collected including a decent size Megalodon tooth.  Seeing what the North Carolina waters have to offer helps encourage folks to want to go scuba diving even that much more.  Between the creatures, artifacts, wrecks and history, why wouldn’t anyone want to dive here?

Scouts Learning to Breathe Underwater

For the Scouts, I expanded the Discover Scuba Diving program to include the requirements for the Scuba BSA achievement.  To do this, the Scouts had to learn about the scuba equipment and how to put it together and take it apart.  In addition, the Scouts had to learn some skills, such as flooding and clearing a mask, recovering a regulator, breathing from an alternate air source and others.  Once they completed the skills, we had fun swimming in the pool, going down to the deep end, and playing around with our buoyancy and trying to keep track of our buddies!

I certainly encourage the Scouts to continue to swim and learn to scuba dive by acquiring the Scuba Diving Merit Badge.  Having the Merit Badge and an Open Water scuba certification allows them to truly experience the diving in the Atlantic Ocean.  They will be able to see the wrecks and sea life that I have been writing about for the past month.

BSA Swim Test Night

BSA Swim Test Night

After my scuba diving experience with the Scouts, the YMCA had Scouts come in for the BSA swim test.  It was a fun experience to watch all the Scouts complete the test.  It was amazing how many Scouts showed up and how efficiently they all completed their swim.  I was able to get in my scuba gear and take a few pictures of them in the water.  It was a great day to be in the water and a fun day for all the Scouts who showed up to the YMCA.

I plan to host regular Discover Scuba Diving/Scuba BSA achievement events for the Scouts to encourage this activity.  As I have said in a previous post, this is a perfect sport for adventurous youth.  I have to thank the Cape Fear Council of the Boy Scouts and Trey Glenham, District Executive, for their support in helping me get the word out about the Scouting and Scuba Diving program.  They have been invaluable to getting this off the ground.  I look forward to many more days and dives with the Scouts of the Cape Fear Council!
